成本「下降超過280倍」是什麼意思？
成本從100元下降到70元，我們可以說成本「下降30％」。
因為下降了30元，30元佔100元的30%。
那如果成本100元，「下降280倍」，是什麼意思呢？
下降超過280倍？
「下降30％」是指「下降成本的30％」。
但是，「下降280倍」很明顯不是指「下降成本的280倍」。
先看看出處。
報告中也強調AI系統推理成本的大幅下降。從2022年11月至2024年10月，執行GPT-3.5等級任務的推理成本暴降超過280倍。硬體層面上，運算成本每年下降30％，能源效率則每年提升40％，大大降低了AI開發與應用門檻。
而英文原文是：
Driven by increasingly capable small models, the inference cost for a system performing at the level of GPT-3.5 dropped over 280-fold between November 2022 and October 2024. At the hardware level, costs have declined by 30% annually, while energy efficiency has improved by 40% each year.
而如果再查詢數據的話，會看到這一段：
The cost of querying an AI model that scores the equivalent of GPT-3.5 (64.8) on MMLU, a popular benchmark for assessing language model performance, dropped from $20.00 per million tokens in November 2022 to just $0.07 per million tokens by October 2024 (Gemini-1.5-Flash-8B)—a more than 280-fold reduction in approximately 18 months.
成本從20元，降為0.07元，20 ÷ 0.07＝285.7。
也就是說，0.07約為20的1/285。
下降280倍 = 降為原先的1/280
所以，英文的「280-fold reduction 」，翻成中文是「下降280倍」，實際上的意義是「降為原先的1/280」，也可以說是「下降為0.35%」或是「下降99.65%」。
可以感覺得出來，當下降幅度比較小時，用百分比表示還蠻清楚的。
但是當下降幅度比較大時，用百分比不太直覺，就可以改用「N-fold」。
